Product Details

Ultimate Performance replacement running spikes are heat-tested for maximum durability. Choosing the right length of running spikes depends on the track surface, event type, and weather conditions.

Here's a guide to help you choose the appropriate length:

1. Replacement Spikes for Synthetic Tracks (e.g., tartan, mondo)

Usual spike length: 5mm or 6mm. These surfaces are designed for shorter spikes to provide optimal grip without damaging the track.

When to adjust: You may wish to use 9mm spikes in very wet conditions to prevent slipping if the track regulations permit. Often they do not.

2. Grass or Dirt Tracks

Usual spike length: 9mm - 12mm. Grass and dirt surfaces are softer and may require longer spikes for traction.

When to adjust: Use 15mm spikes if the ground is very soft or muddy.

3. Cross-Country or Trail Running

Usual spike length: 9mm - 12mm. These surfaces are uneven and may be slippery or muddy. Longer spikes provide stability.

When to adjust: Use 15mm spikes for extremely muddy or soft terrain.

4. Ice or Snow (rare)

  • Usual spike length: 12mm - 15mm
    • Why: Longer spikes dig into icy or snowy conditions, offering better grip.

General Recommendations by Event

Sprints (100m, 200m, 400m): Typically 6mm spikes for synthetic tracks.

Middle-Distance (800m - 1500m): 6mm spikes for synthetic; consider 9mm if conditions are wet.

Long-Distance (3000m and above): Same as middle-distance. For cross-country, opt for 9mm-15mm based on terrain.

Field Events (High Jump, Javelin, etc.): May require 9mm or longer spikes depending on the event and surface.

Spike Regulations

Always check the competition's rules. Many track events limit spike length to a maximum of 6mm on synthetic tracks to protect the surface.

Additional Tips

  • Always carry a spike wrench to adjust lengths as needed.
  • Test your spikes during warm-up to ensure proper traction for the conditions.
